ISTAT April 2024 Report: Tourism Slows with 25.7 Million Overnight Stays

ISTAT has recently published the tourism statistics for April of this year. The hotel and non-hotel sectors recorded 25.7 million overnight stays in April (-8% YoY and -10% compared to 2019), marking a halt in the recovery of our sector after the pandemic. For instance, in April 2023, there were 28.1 million overnight stays recorded. We note that 2023 closed with 431 million overnight stays (-1% compared to 2019), and the months of January, February, and March this year recorded very positive volumes of stays, respectively +5%, +9%, and +8% compared to 2019.

The hotel sector alone recorded 16.7 million overnight stays in April (-7% YoY and -15% compared to 2019). In 2023, the volume of hotel stays was still 5 percentage points below the volume recorded in 2019, standing at 268 million, with April 2023 at -8% compared to 2019. However, the volumes of overnight stays recorded in January, February, and March of this year by the hotel sector showed, for the first time since the Covid emergency, volumes exceeding 2019.

The non-hotel sector, on the other hand, had already recorded in January, February, March, and April 2023 higher volumes of stays than those recorded in 2019. In April of this year, 9 million stays were recorded, a decrease of 11% compared to April 2023 volumes and only +1% compared to 2019.
